That thinking is changing. In 2023, a growing number of organizations are deliberately spreading their workloads across multiple cloud providers. This is not accidental sprawl or the result of acquisitions bringing different tech stacks together. It is a conscious strategic decision driven by practical business concerns.

Why Single-Cloud Creates Risk

Consider a typical application built entirely on AWS. It might use Lambda for serverless compute, DynamoDB for its database, SQS for messaging, CloudFront for CDN, and Cognito for authentication. Each of these services has a proprietary API, data format, and operational model. Moving any single component to another provider requires significant re-engineering.
Beyond lock-in, there are practical risks. Outages happen. When AWS us-east-1 goes down, it takes half the internet with it. If your disaster recovery plan assumes the same provider's infrastructure will be available in another region, you still face correlated failure risks.

AWS is often the default choice for general-purpose workloads and has the largest community of practitioners.
Microsoft Azure
Azure excels in enterprise environments, particularly those already invested in Microsoft technologies. Its integration with Active Directory, Office 365, and the broader Microsoft ecosystem makes it the natural choice for identity management and enterprise productivity workloads. Azure's hybrid cloud capabilities, particularly Azure Arc, are among the strongest in the industry.
Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
GCP leads in data analytics and machine learning. BigQuery remains one of the most powerful and cost-effective data warehousing solutions available. Google's AI and ML services, built on the same infrastructure that powers Google Search and YouTube, are technically sophisticated. GCP also leads in Kubernetes, which makes sense given that Google created it.
When Multi-Cloud Makes Sense

Best-of-breed service selection. When your data engineering team wants BigQuery for analytics but your web application runs most efficiently on AWS Lambda and DynamoDB, using both providers lets you pick the optimal service for each workload rather than accepting compromises.
Regulatory and compliance requirements. Some industries require data residency in specific regions or jurisdictions. Not all providers have data centers in every required location. Multi-cloud gives you geographic flexibility.
Business continuity. For mission-critical applications where downtime translates directly to revenue loss, distributing across providers provides genuine resilience against provider-level outages.
Negotiating leverage. Organizations spending significant amounts on cloud services gain substantial negotiating power when they can credibly move workloads between providers. This is not just theoretical; we have seen clients reduce their cloud bills by 20 to 30 percent simply by having viable alternatives in place.
Acquisition and partnership alignment. When your business acquires another company running on a different cloud, or when a major partner requires integration with their cloud ecosystem, multi-cloud becomes a practical necessity.

Spot and preemptible instances. Both AWS (Spot Instances) and GCP (Preemptible VMs) offer deeply discounted compute for interruptible workloads. By distributing batch processing across both providers, you can optimize for availability and cost simultaneously.
Reserved capacity arbitrage. Committing to reserved instances on one provider while keeping flexible capacity on another gives you both cost savings and the ability to shift workloads if pricing changes.
Egress cost management. Data transfer between cloud providers is one of the most overlooked costs in multi-cloud. Design your architecture to minimize cross-cloud data movement. Keep data and the compute that processes it on the same provider whenever possible.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
We have seen organizations stumble with multi-cloud in predictable ways. Here are the mistakes to avoid:
Going multi-cloud without the team to support it. Each cloud provider has its own operational model, security practices, and tooling. If your team barely has enough expertise for one cloud, spreading across three will result in shallow knowledge everywhere and deep expertise nowhere. Build skills incrementally.
Treating multi-cloud as a goal rather than a strategy. The objective is never to use multiple clouds for its own sake. The objective is to solve specific business problems. If a single cloud provider meets all your needs well, adding another just adds complexity without corresponding benefit.
Ignoring the networking complexity. Connecting multiple cloud environments securely and performantly requires careful network architecture. VPN tunnels, dedicated interconnects, and DNS management across providers demand specialized expertise.
Underestimating the cultural shift. Multi-cloud is not just a technical decision. It changes how teams are organized, how skills are developed, and how operational processes work. Underestimating the organizational change management required is a common reason multi-cloud initiatives stall.
Our Recommendation
For most mid-sized businesses we work with, we recommend a pragmatic approach. Start with a primary cloud provider for the majority of your workloads, chosen based on your specific technical requirements and existing team skills. Then, adopt a secondary provider for specific use cases where it offers clear advantages.
Invest in cloud-agnostic practices (containers, Terraform, open-source tools) from the beginning, even if you only use one provider today. This keeps your options open without the full operational overhead of actively managing multiple clouds. As your organization matures, you can expand your multi-cloud footprint deliberately and incrementally.
The multi-cloud journey is a marathon, not a sprint. The businesses that succeed are those that approach it with clear objectives, realistic timelines, and a commitment to building the skills and processes that make it sustainable.
